My new Philips 32PF9966 is displaying various error codes in the service menu, but otherwise seems to be operating normally, as far as I can tell. When I reset the error buffer, a new error appears fairly quickly. Is this normal or does it indicate that there's something wrong with the set? I'm a little reluctant to call Philips to ask since users are warned to stay out of the service menu and I don't want to give them an excuse to void the warranty.
Here are the errors that I've written down, but there may have been others as well:

My 32PF9966/69 is a Asia Pacific model giving the same error codes with details as below:
Error Code: 035 003 014 003 035
Error Module: Feature Box

I guess the feature box version matches with yours. My panel is not able to retain its last viewed channel # when put to standby and then power cycled with the wall power plug switch istead of the power On/off switch on the panel. This does not happens all the time, thus I went to see the service menu and saw the code. I reported the problem to Philips and I made the visiting guy go to service menu and check for the codes in front of me. I'm still awaiting a reply from him. Other than that there does not seem to be any problem with the set.
It is a P+2 set. It also is plagued with the black vertical bar issue that the Philips 36PW9527 crt model P+1 had. Infact in P+2 there are vertical bars with every 2 inch gaps accross the screen but with about 80% less intensity than P+1. Thus is all the more difficult to catch, but at some scenes one cant help but to notice them.
Pls keep us posted if your knowledge about the error code widens.

It took 16 mths since my buy of 9527 for philips to accept that it had vertical bars when I finally showed it to them on a Avia test pattern. So they offered a replacement with 30PF9945. I got a trial of 9945 and did not like it at all so I returned it. Then they offered 32PF9966 at an additional cost due to the price difference. I took the offer and I'm using the 9966 since 10-12 days now.
Thus given my scenario, the 9966 was a life saver so I ought to like it.
The one thing bothers me is the error code and the vertical bars. I saw Shrek 2 last weekend and in one of the song sequence sung by fairy godmother showed the screen filled with dirty black bars, there were atyleast 8-10 of them which I did not had the courage to count. I instantly poped in the Avia dvd again hoping not to catch the bars in the test pattern. They were right there but was with 80% less intensity than the P+1 models. So I now kindda feel like I paid the extra buck to buy more bars
P+2 would have been great if it would have come minus the bars. But I read that the other brands like the sharp and sony has their own set of problems too. So right now I'm confused and trying to compromise, but if the bar shows up very prominently over time then I guess I would have to take on with Philips once again as they promised me that this model would not come with any bars when they made the replacement offer.

The Philips guy called up and confirmed that the error code is being generated at the time of switching off the set in all the pieces of the same model accross the globe. He said its a non-fatal error and one should not get concerned about it. (This answer does not satisfy me as in a way they are saying that they cant do anything about it!!)
He also confirmed that there seems to be a bug in the firmware due to which the TV is unable to retain its last viewed channel number sometimes, which their research team in Holland is now looking into. (Another cant do anything presently kind of answer).
Dont know why do put a product to the market when they have not sorted out stupid things like internal components not working with each other in sync and generating errors.

Tangerineink, I think in the current scenario (assuming that all displays has some kind of unacceptable bug) Sony is outpriced. Sharp is better if you are looking to work on the panel with your PC and Philips is good for Movies not because of its P+2 but for Ambilight. For movies like The day after tomorrow, it gives a feeling that the storm and the lightning is spilled out of the TV into the room. Good bright idea of putting the light on the back of the TV. In some scenes it miscalculates the background light and lights the wall with a foreground colour on the TV. But then I think that would be perfected with time and it still makes it a good innovative idea.
Why I recommend sharp for PC is because it lets you input WXGA resolution from your PC thus you retain the widescreen aspect. With Philips and many others they let you input only XGA and then with a widescreen mode on the TV you can strech it to fit the entire screen. Thus you dont really get bigger working space on your desktop but rather a stretched image or else black bars on the sides if you keep the aspect to xga or 4:3.

Never compared the PC input clarity between them. Technically there should not be much difference as the native resolution of both Philips and Sharp is the same so till you input it with the recommended resolution there should be no issues. It is only when you input it with a higher or lower resolution and then the panel has to scale that you get not so sharp texts.
I've also not tried connecting the PC to the 9966 as it would only take HDMI. So I'll have to upgrade my PC with a VGA or graphics card with HDMI port. Dont know which would be a cheapest best solutions, still searching.
But I've connected 9946 with my PC thru the component to VGA adapter that was supplied with the panel and it worked good in XGA. Thus I can only assume that the 9966 will score even better over 9946.
Which are the panels that you have tried so far and what were the problems with them?

FYI, the philips comes with a dvi to hdmi cable. I picked up a pci card that had dvi output for under $100 to dedicate an older machine to my setup 50 inch philips 9966. It works very nicely through the hdmi and uses a wide screen resolion rather than stretch. it leaves about 1/2 inch around the screen unlit but I am going to try powerstrip to use it all. Digital pics projected this way are awesome!

Collingwood, I did not go for those cards because I thought whats the point if my 9966 will not give me wxga? Can you suggest me a decent card under $100?
Whats the unlit 1/2 inch issue ? does it strip the original image?
Whats all about powerstrip ? I've been reading about it all over the places? how does it help ? can you point me to some good thread that you know of?
Tangerineink, its a good news that the 9966 does WXGA with pc input. I concluded it wont as I read users of 9986 (UK model) complaining that theirs would not. Atleast something for me to chear for.

I picked up a PowerColor Radeon 7000 from tiger direct for $67 Canadian. Works great! Just find out if you have spare agp or pci slot and get the appropriate card.
Powerstrip is a program that controls screen output and allows you to tweak to fill the screen..I have downloaded but not tried it yet. Google will find it for you and show you screen shots etc.

Sky Q Remote Codes
With some research on minimum satisfactory performance versus the cost I was able to zero it down to the Asus V9520-XTD128 card which is basically based on nVidia GeForce FX 5200 with 128Mb DDR, 8X, DVI, supports directx 9, and multi-display. Its listed at USD 60 on tigerdirect. Whats your suggestion, is it a value buy ? and will that be fine with the 9966 ?

I don't think you could go wrong with either..my demands were light..mainly digital pics and a bit of web surfing. I went for the 7000 due to it being ATI based (supporting canadian business :-) , PCI, and having the DVI output at the lowest price. Basically, I wanted the lowest price card with DVI out as the machine I put it in is a dinosaur..no use throwing money away...It supports all that you mentioned at a lower price..installed without a hitch and works great.

This same person also indicated that his Philips plasma TV displayed similar errors, but seemed otherwise normal.
I think I'll call Philips and ask them about the errors since it seems that they don't get too upset when customers go into the service menu. It's interesting to note that when I run the 'functional test' (a self-test, I assume) it doesn't find any new errors. Maybe these codes aren't really 'hard errors' but more like software warnings. I noticed that the service menu has an option for updating the set's software. I assume that Philips will only come out and do that if you can demonstrate a problem, correct?
I am curious about the vertical black bars that you were referring to. I've never seen anything like that on my set. Is there any particular type of input that would make the TV display these bars? Are they difficult to see or are they obvious to anyone who views the screen casually?

rmscheller, if you have a Avia DVD then run the IRE field test and observe the screen very carefully between 20 IRE to 40 IRE. It is also possible that for the first time it would be difficult for you to spot the bars on this test as it would be very faint.
If you really want to see it then run Shrek 2. Just before the 1st entry of fairy god mother where she sings a song for the princess, there is a scene where the princess is standing in the balcony with tears in her eyes. Then she looks up in the sky filled with lot of bubles, pause on this scene and you can very clearly see the screen filled with vertical bars with the sky and the bubles.
I've a very bad experience with black bars on the philips 9527 sets. So right now I'm trying to avoid looking at them but my eyes seems to always searching for them and once you spot them its hard to keep the eyes calm. You would then start to see the bars in other videos too but would be very faint. I guess after more usage my eyes would be able to pick it up even more nicely.
About the errors, the philips guy told me that it happens when you switch off the TV and is a non-fatal one. But the q is, why should we buy an expensive panel when it has errors fatal or not ?
Another thing I observed is that the errors does not seem to occur when you put the TV to standby using the remote then use the power off button on the side of the TV to power it off and finally use the wall outlet power switch. I used to put the TV to standby and directly power it off using the wall outlet so that the TV power off switch does not wear off over time. Since I've started to use the TV power off button the errors has not happened, but i'm still observing.
Retaining of last browsed channel also got sorted out quite a bit by the above method but just last night it again started off with channel 1 so I'm not very sure.
